This brings me to fly tying, if I'm not fly fishing and not real busy I actually get to tie up a few flies for when I do get out on the water. The flies below are pretty much tied up for calico bass, although I'm quite sure that any type of fish in the ocean would be more than willing to take a bite at any of them.

Big Calico Bass Flies
My friend Jon Nakano is very inspiring when he puts up his paddle-board fly fishing reports. The guy goes out on his paddle board onto the big blue Pacific and fly fishes for calico bass or for whatever is on the bite. Jon has the paddle board fishing down to a science, he always puts up some amazing images of huge fish.
Well I bring up Jon, because I seen this fly he tied up recently, he called it the Cherry Bomb! The name came to him because of the calico he had on was so big that the fly rod looked like it literally blew up. Yes I know it just broke, but if you would have seen the images the rod, it did look like it blew up, hence the name Cherry Bomb for the fly he tied up.
Below are some closer images of the flies pictured above. These flies are fun to tie and very easy to tie as well.

The fly above is a very close if not the same pattern as the Cherry Bomb tied by Jon
Hook: 2/0 Mustad 3407DT
Eyes: Dazl-eyes 7/32
Tail: Saddle hackle black
Body: Crosscut Rabbit/Zonker orange
Weed Guard: 30lb mono
Thread: Ultra thread

Same fly just in solid black
Again the flies below are the same type flies as the Cherry Bomb, they just vary in colors and some in length.

I'm itching to get out on the kayak and cast these big flies to a willing calico bass or some other toothy critter from the ocean. It's so much different fly fishing the ocean than a lake or stream, the fish tend to have more fighting strength/power for their size. I'm hoping I could put up a report for all the people who frequent my blog.
Have fun tying these flies if you choose to try the pattern out.
Cheers!
