Anyhow I fished one of the local kelp beds. Not to many guys out on the water, one other kayak fisher and a few power boaters.

Tons of life in and out of the water, pelicans, seagulls, and terns diving into the ocean after the tons of baitfish that were around. I was also lucky enough to watch a school of dolphin crash through the bait near a red buoy. I also spotted this little crab on the kelp.

I did lots of fishing with not much catching, I had my fly rod with me and a kelp cutter. I totally screwed up though, I somehow left all my plastics for the kelp cutter at home. I was in such a rush that I forgot to pack my swim baits and was left with just my flies. I made the best with what I had, I ended up getting skunked. For those of you that fly fish near the kelp or in my case this morning on the kelp, know it's almost impossible to fly fish in this dense kelp forest, hence the kelp cutter rig. If anyone out there might have some advice on what I could do in a situation like this where the kelp is to dense to fly fish by all means please share.

It was really nice to get out on the water, even with the lack of fish catching. It's nice just to be able to get out on the water and actually share a report.
Catch you on the water,

Looks and sounds like a good time spent on the water. Fish or no fish the pics say it all. Great day and great pics.
It's absolutely true, the time spent out on the water with all the wildlife around is priceless.
Really fun post. Makes me wanna buy a kayak!
Jim, the Kayak has definitely opened a whole new world for me. Most day are like living a NatGeo moment. Just forgetting about fly fishing for a moment, the kayak really puts me next to nature and has been very well worth the investment for me.
Kelp - I like exploring the experience and knowledge of your exact contemporary. Thanks for sharing information.
